Isotopes in Humans and Other Animals

The isotopic composition of animal tissues is influenced by dietary inputs, including food and water. In a long-term collaboration involving the Thure Cerling Lab and the Ehleringer Lab, our research has been directed in understanding the relationships between the CHNOS isotopic compositions of dietary inputs and the isotope composition of tissues in different vertebrates, including domesticated animals, game animals, and humans. We can then use tissue measurements to reconstruct dietary differences and movements.
